Summary and Objectives

This workshop is provided to support McHenry County classroom teachers who are new to teaching special education. The target audience includes first year LBS1s, teacher residents in special education instructional roles, or long-term substitutes serving as special education teachers who would benefit from a basic understanding of the special education process and a deeper dive on how the pieces all fit together to meet student needs.

  • Tips for Meeting a Variety of Learning Needs

Darbi Carbone, Lead Educational Advocate at Options and Advocacy for McHenry County – 13 years of experience in the field of Educational Advocacy personally and professionally. She is in her 6th year at Options & Advocacy. She started in the Autism Resource Center as the Parent Mentor. She is now the Lead Educational Advocate for the Autism Resource Center. Darbi is a long-time member of COPAA, the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates. She is currently completing her Special Education Advocate Training (SEAT) certification. Her experience includes advocating for students, including her two sons with autism, for more than 13 years. She enjoys working collaboratively with school district staff and families through educational advocacy to create a supportive educational plan for student success.


Tiffany Valkema, LBS1
, is the Autism Resource Center Program Manager at Options and Advocacy for McHenry County. She has worked 17 years in Special Education Teaching and Leadership roles. She has a ISBE certification as an LBS1 and Director of Special Education.
