SUMMARY:WORLD TRAUMA DAY - Our Ancient Brain: Understanding Ourselves Through Evolution | In-Person | Presented by Gary Rukin\, LPC
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE!\nFREE: 5.5 IDFPR CEU’s for LSW/LCSW\, LPC/LCPC\, Psychologists\, and IAODAPCA \n* 1 hour Lunch on your own \n  \nSUMMARY \nThis training equips mental health professionals with an evolutionary\, trauma-informed lens for understanding clients. Its core idea is evolutionary mismatch: brains and bodies shaped over 6 million years struggle in modern environments\, producing anxiety\, depression\, ADHD\, addiction\, and a loneliness epidemic. It traces brain architecture\, the HPA axis and chronic stress\, and why humans uniquely suffer from rumination. The framework reframes symptoms as ancestral adaptations—reducing shame—and integrates with CBT\, DBT\, ACT\, EMDR\, as well as somatic approaches. It teaches six interventions: physiological sigh\, psychoeducation\, completing the stress cycle\, window-of-tolerance work\, nature prescription\, and social co-regulation\, closing with a practical 30-day integration plan. \nOBJECTIVES \n\nExplain how evolutionary biology shapes common mental health presentations\nRecognize ‘evolutionary mismatches’ in your own life and clinical practice\nDescribe the stress response (HPA axis\, cortisol) in accessible\, non-jargon language\nApply six interventions that align with evolved neurobiology\nUse psychoeducation about evolution to reduce client shame and increase self-compassion\nPractice three experiential exercises that generate embodied insight\nIntegrate evolutionary awareness into your existing trauma-informed clinical framework\nLeave with a concrete 30-day integration plan for your own practice\n\nPRESENTER \nGary Rukin\, LPC\, MA\, MS\, has worked in Community Mental Health for the past thirteen years. He serves as the Trauma-Informed Coordinator for the McHenry County Mental Health Board\, and has presented trainings on Dialectical Behavior Therapy\, Understanding Psychosis\, Understanding and Treating Emotional Trauma\, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Thresholds\, The Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Recovery Conference\, Northwestern University Hospital\, and the Illinois Department of Human Services. \n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Building a Better Suicide Risk Assessment: The Nuts and Bolts of the Columbia Protocol | Virtual | Presented by Adam Lesser\, LCSW
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE!\nFREE: 1.5 IDFPR CEU for LSW/LCSW\, LPC/LCPC\, Psychologists\, and IAODAPCA \n  \nSUMMARY\n \nThe Columbia Protocol (C-SSRS) (www.cssrs.columbia.edu) is now widely recognized as a gold-standard\, innovative suicide risk screening tool. It has been implemented in many systems across the US and abroad with tremendous benefit– identification of people who would have otherwise been missed while redirecting scarce resources. Evaluation in hospital-based psychiatric emergency departments when it is not necessary is costly\, sometimes traumatic\, and may be less effective in routing people into ongoing care. This workshop will review the development of the C-SSRS and its administration\, covering its items predictive of increased risk. Participants will learn about how to administer the full and screening versions of the tool\, how to customize the tool and how to interpret results.  Population-specific editions will also be reviewed (very young children\, military\, etc.). Training will include didactic\, video demonstration and role play training techniques. \nOBJECTIVES \n1. Explain how screening with the C-SSRS can be used to identify at-risk individuals and identify steps taken to implement a comprehensive screening program that includes targeted and public health approaches to prevention \n2. Describe how utilizing a systemic best practice measurement\, the C-SSRS\, to identify suicidal ideation and behavior results in improved identification and precision\, which ultimately saves lives \n3. Learn the types of suicidal ideation and the four behaviors that are predictive of imminent risk and how to administer the C-SSRS full and screener scales \nPRESENTER \nAdam Lesser\, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker\, Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatric Social Work in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons\, Lecturer at the Columbia University School of Social Work and the Deputy Director of the Columbia Lighthouse Project at the New York State Psychiatric Institute where he assists with all suicide prevention activities related to public health including the international dissemination and implementation of the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). He has published\, presented internationally and consulted to state and local governments on best practices for suicide risk identification and prevention. His work has been featured in Social Work Today Magazine and on Atlanta National Public Radio\, CNN-Espanol\, Univision and other local print and television media outlets.

SUMMARY:Deepening and Expanding Somatic Techniques: The Embodiment of Trauma and Stress Part II | In-Person| Presented by Becky Carter\, LCPC
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE!\n*There will be a 1 hour lunch break on your own. \nFREE: 5 IDFPR CEU for LSW/LCSW\, LPC/LCPC\, Psychologists\, and IAODAPCA \nSUMMARY\n \nThis training is for practitioners seeking to deepen their connection with the somatic model and the impact of stress and trauma on the nervous system. It will assist those seeking to better understand the embodied stress experience across a variety of settings and treatment scenarios. This training offers a deeper immersion into somatic therapy principles and practices utilized by the presenter. Designed for clinicians and practitioners with some knowledge of somatic approaches\, this course emphasizes the refined clinical skills of embodied presence and moment-to-moment attunement to nervous system dynamics.  The presenter will demonstrate methods of titration into somatic witnessing for shame reduction. \nParticipants will expand their awareness of ways to support somatic inquiry and sensation awareness for those with body disconnection or dissociation\, sensation fear\, and body sensation overwhelm which can be features of the neurodivergence that trauma often creates. Through experiential activities\, participants will gain a better understanding of the arc of a somatic session and methods of resourcing\, sensing activation states and feeling awareness while supporting body capacity and wisdom. The presenter will discuss the importance of somatic self-resourcing on the part of the embodied witness\, therapist\, helper\, teacher\, and crisis supporter and explore methods for coping with vicarious somatic stress and fatigue. \nOBJECTIVES \n\nDemonstrate increased understanding of embodied presence as a core clinical skill in somatic practice.\nApply principles of titration and somatic witnessing to support shame reduction and greater client safety.\nExplain the arc of a somatic session\, including resourcing\, sensing activation states\, and supporting feeling awareness while honoring body capacity and wisdom.\nCultivate greater awareness of practitioner self-resourcing and responses to vicarious somatic stress and fatigue.\n\nPRESENTER \nBecky Carter\, LCPC\, is a biracial\, cisgender\, transracially adopted female with West African and Sicilian ancestors. She has two black adopted children. \nBecky has been a trauma therapist for over 20 years helping heal the wounds of relational trauma that occur in-utero and beyond. SUMMARY:The Lingering Shadow: Navigating the Depths of Traumatic Grief | In-Person| Presented by Gary Rukin\, LPC
DESCRIPTION:REGISTERATION IS CLOSED. **Please email Kris Doherty at kdoherty@mc708.org to be added to the Waitlist.\nFREE: 3 IDFPR CEU for LSW/LCSW\, LPC/LCPC\, Psychologists\, and IAODAPCA\n  \nSUMMARY\n \nThis presentation examines traumatic grief as a profound and often disabling response to sudden or violent loss that disrupts the natural grieving process and overwhelms identity\, meaning-making\, and emotional regulation. It differentiates traumatic grief from normative grief and PTSD\, emphasizing how trauma fragments memory\, arrests emotional processing\, and freezes aspects of identity. The presentation explores how cultural\, spiritual\, and contextual factors shape grief experiences\, as well as the acute aftermath of loss\, which may include shock\, intense sadness\, anxiety\, and somatic symptoms. Healing is framed as a compassionate\, trauma-informed process that supports narrative reconstruction\, mindfulness\, self-compassion\, and creative expression. The presentation underscores the importance of self-care\, professional boundaries\, and supportive networks for both clinicians and those they serve. \nOBJECTIVES \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nDefine and Understand Traumatic Grief\nDescribe Traumatic vs. Episodic Memory\nExplain Why Traumatic Loss is an Identity Crisis\nDescribe the Importance of Cultural\, Spiritual & Contextual Factors\nCharacterize the Immediate Aftermath of a Traumatic Loss\nDelineate likely long-term effects\nUnderstand Multifaceted and Compassionate Approaches to Healing\nIdentify Useful Therapeutic Modalities\nApply Self-Care Practices for Yourself & Clients\nEvaluate Ceremonial Healing practices\n\nPRESENTER \nGary Rukin\, LPC has worked in Community Mental Health for the past thirteen years. \n

SUMMARY:Fragmentation and Dissociation in the Wake of Complex Trauma | In-Person| Presented by Becky Carter\, LCPC
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION CLOSED – To be put on the Waitlist\, Email Kris Doherty at kdoherty@mc708.org.\n*There will be a 1 hour lunch break on your own. \nFREE: 5 IDFPR CEU for LSW/LCSW\, LPC/LCPC\, Psychologists\, and IAODAPCA \n  \nSUMMARY\n \nFragmentation and dissociation are the protective and adaptive responses to trauma – especially when escape\, resistance\, or external support is unavailable. Survivors of trauma\, particularly those abused in early childhood\, create ways to minimize pain and preserve functioning. \nUnderstanding dissociation as a survival response and recognizing fragmentation in the therapy process is essential when working with survivors of trauma like abuse\, neglect\, torture\, domestic violence\, oppression\, and combat. Dissociated experiences create immense shame for survivors and are often underreported\, unrecognized\, and underassessed in the therapeutic relationship. \nThis training explores the spectrum of dissociation\, from numbing and disconnecting to severe disruptions in consciousness\, body sensation\, awareness\, memory\, identity\, and perception. This training will include an exploration of the connection between trauma fragmentation\, different types of dissociative disorders\, symptom presentation\, as well as contemporary treatment modalities. \nOBJECTIVES \nUpon completion of training participants will: \n1. Be able to identify dissociative disorders and associated criteria.\n2. Gain an understanding of dissociative and fragmented responses in clinical interactions.\n3. Identify conditions in which trauma leads to dissociation and fragmentation.\n4. Learn at least two treatment approaches for working with dissociation. \n  \nPRESENTER \nBecky Carter\, LCPC\, is a biracial\, cisgender\, transracially adopted female with West African and Sicilian ancestors. She has two black adopted children. \nBecky has been a trauma therapist for over 20 years helping heal the wounds of relational trauma that occur in-utero and beyond.
