Head Start is a free, federally funded preschool/family program operated in McHenry county, serving children three to five years old. Head Start centers provide programs and services including individualized educational programming to support each child's school readiness. Head Start provides opportunities for children with disabilities to fully participate and ongoing child assessment to support individual growth and development. Transportation services are available when possible. Head Start knows family's are important and plan family involvement opportunities with special efforts to include father's or significant males in the child's life. Families are supported in setting and achieving self-identified goals to improve future family outcomes. Medical and dental resources are provided to assist families in accessing medical or dental services when there is a need for those types of services. Head Start provides nutritional meals and snacks in collaboration with a nutritionist monthly. Parents are encouraged to participate in volunteer or other opportunities to interact with other families and programs in the community.
Families who earn at or less than 100% of the federal poverty guidelines are income eligible to receive services. Up to 10% of the program’s enrollment can be from higher income families or families experiencing emergency situations. Families may also qualify under a categorical eligibility category, (examples include, foster children, receipt of SNAP or TANF funds, supplemental security funds, or homelessness as per the McKinney-Vento Act).

Applications for enrollment are accepted throughout the calendar year for age eligible children. Families can qualify under a categorical eligibility category, (examples include, foster children, receipt of SNAP or TANF funds, supplemental security funds, or homelessness as per the McKinney-Vento Act) or earn at or less than 100% of the federal poverty guidelines are income eligible to receive services. Children with disabilities are welcome to apply.
