KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Cassandra Vohs-Demann

Cassandra blessed us with two engaging sessions to help us rise and thrive together during challenging times!

I Started a Choir and It Changed My Life
In this heartfelt session, Cassandra Vohs-Demann shared how starting a community choir unexpectedly transformed her life and the lives of hundreds of others. What began as a simple idea, fueled by courage and heart, evolved into a powerful space for connection, healing, and belonging. Through storytelling and live music, she illustrated how saying “yes” to a bold vision led to deep community impact. Her talk highlighted the importance of creative risk-taking, leading with heart, and the ripple effect of building something bigger than oneself.

Your Confidant Voice: Owning Your Power, Presence, and Impact
In her second session, Cassandra empowered participants to reclaim their voices in a world that often encourages silence and conformity. Drawing on over 30 years of experience as a musician, producer, and community builder, she used music, storytelling, and interactive exercises to help attendees overcome self-doubt and speak with authenticity and courage. The session encouraged individuals to embrace their presence, trust their message, and use their voice intentionally—whether in leadership, advocacy, or everyday moments that matter.

Breakout Sessions

Is That All There Is?

We discussed how each of us defined communityconnections, and social isolation. This session provided an opportunity to examine the needs within a community and reflect on whether those needs were being met. We also explored alternative ways to connect with others and considered how to keep programs sustainable. Key takeaways from the session:

  • Gained a new perspective on connecting when traditional methods failed
  • Considered various definitions of social isolation and approached it from a different angle
  • Focused on building long-term connections
  • Encouraged removing age and gender from our mindset when thinking about community and connection

From Scroll to Soar: How Communities Convert Digital Challenges into Thriving Opportunities
The session explored how digital challenges, like social media and smartphone use, impacted youth and families—contributing to rising rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. It provided research-based insights and practical tools to help parents and communities support healthier, more connected lives for young people.

Because “Sorry For Your Loss” Isn’t Enough
The session addressed how grief is often misunderstood and overlooked in today’s fast-paced culture. It emphasized that grief is a natural human response and highlighted the need for greater awareness and compassion. Participants learned practical tools to recognize signs of grief, respond supportively, and avoid causing further harm. The session also challenged common myths about grief and aimed to build confidence in supporting others through loss.

Definitional Ceremonies in Practice: Witnessing Stories, Building Community
The session explored the use of Definitional Ceremonies and Outsider Witnessing—key practices in Narrative Therapy that promoted healing through shared storytelling and reflective listening. Participants were introduced to foundational Narrative Therapy frameworks and learned how these practices supported client agency, meaning-making, and identity transformation. Real-world examples and interactive activities demonstrated how witnessing each other’s stories could build resilience and strengthen community connections.

Conversations that Build Community
This past year, our church journeyed through a series of conversations around the potentially divisive and controversial subject of same-sex weddings hosted in church. In this workshop we will share the process used to lead the congregation through having conversations and finding understanding, having respect, and building community even while in disagreement. We will share the resources we used, the feedback from participants, and will help you find a way through disagreement, foregoing the common path of division.

Building Community and Connection for Older Adults
Understanding the continuum of care for older adults is key to ensuring they receive the right support at the right time. It’s not just about medical needs, it’s about preserving dignity, independence, and quality of life. In this session we’ll discuss the opportunities and services available for older adults to age in place and in community so they can thrive at any age.

The “WE” in Wellness and Recovery: Turning our Liabilities into Assets
Let’s explore the transformative power of community in recovery, emphasizing the “we” that turns isolation into connection and shame into shared strength. By reframing personal liabilities—such as past trauma, addiction, or incarceration—as lived experience and wisdom, participants will discover how these challenges can become powerful assets in both personal healing and peer support. Through storytelling, group reflection, and interactive dialogue, we’ll highlight the value of collective growth and the role of vulnerability in fostering lasting recovery.

Fostering Resilience Through Community Partnerships, Healthy Families, and Agencies Panel Discussion
During this interactive panel presentation, we will share the impact and success of bringing together multidisciplinary teams with family and community support, to enhance the overall health and well-being of our families. Panel members will include experts from a variety of disciplines—behavioral health, the nonprofit sector, dietetics, education, and pediatrics—as well as family members who have been directly impacted.
